Effects of Wall Wash Lighting:
A cool lighting technique we are using in one of our projects is a wall wash light. What is a wall wash light? Typically, a wall wash light is placed a certain distance away from a wall and angled to create a stunning ‘wash’ effect. This technique involves illuminating a vertical surface, such as a wall or exterior wall with an even light distribution that creates a soft look. This results in a beautiful glow that washes over the wall and creates a clean, uniform look.
A major advantage to using wall wash lights is the ability to eliminate harsh shadows. Since the light is directed evenly across the wall, these lights balance the illumination.
Lighting Techniques:
Most wall wash lights are installed from the ceiling downward. Wall wash lights that illuminate from the floor are less common but can create a different effect. What we found was that the effect changes when you move the light farther or closer to the wall.
Why Use Wall Wash Lights?
As well as displaying beauty, the wall wash lights are also practical. Since they distribute light evenly across a surface, they can make a room appear larger and more spacious. This can be useful in small rooms with low ceilings where light can change the feel of a room.
