Choosing the Perfect Paint Color for Your Custom Home

Choosing the perfect paint color for your room can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be! Start by assessing the size of the room and the amount of light it receives, both direct and indirect. Light is a crucial factor in how paint colors appear, as direct light can dramatically alter the color's appearance throughout the day. Remember, a color may look different in the morning compared to the evening.

Consider the light bulbs you use, as they now come in different lumens and color temperatures. This can affect how colors appear in your space. When looking at paint chips in a store, it's helpful to hold a sample of pure white to compare and contrast.

Here are some additional tips for different room orientations:

North-facing rooms:

Light in these rooms is cool and bluish. Bolder colors show up better than muted colors, while lighter colors may appear subdued. Strong colors work well in these spaces.

South-facing rooms:

These rooms receive a lot of high-in-the-sky light, which brings out the best in both cool and warm colors. Dark colors will appear brighter, while lighter colors will seem to glow.

East-facing rooms:

East light is warm and yellowy before noon, and then turns bluer later in the day. Reds, oranges, and yellows work particularly well in these rooms.

West-facing rooms:

Evening light in these rooms is warm and beautiful, while scant morning light can create shadows and make colors look dull.

When painting a ceiling a color other than white, consider using a shade or two lighter than the wall color. This can help create a cohesive look in your space.
